Chapter 9 – Cora

Cora got ready for work in a daze after the door had clicked shut behind Victor. She just felt … incredible. She hadn’t felt this well-rested, this energized, this all-around great in … decades, at least. If ever. Was this … normal? Was this what regular people felt like, every single day of their lives? It seemed ridiculous, obscene, like she was getting away with something that she had no right to be feeling.

And it wasn’t just her mood that was good. It was her body. She felt stronger, more secure, more physically adept and nimble. Shifting into her dragon on the rooftop to make the short flight to work made her feel like her chest was full of light … every movement of her broad wings, her powerful body, made her grin with sheer delight. It was as though her dragon itself was happy with her, as though every wingbeat was celebrating her.

But why? Why did she feel so damn good? Was it the sex? Obviously a lot of chemical processes went on when a person, put crudely, got laid … she’d studied all that, a long time ago, when she’d been a doctor. But it had always been academic. The various neurotransmitters that were released, the way sexual activity displaced and weakened stress hormones and increased the chemicals that were linked to happiness and bonding and what was called ‘love’ ... it had all made perfect sense to her on paper. But being inside of it was … well, it was great, though a part of her found it a little worrisome. Surely it wasn’t meant to be this great.

And she couldn’t shake the elephant in the room, either. She felt amazing, she felt great, she felt wonderful … and wasn’t that what they always said you were meant to feel when you met your soulmate? That word made her bite her lip … but it made the treacherous, stupid, chemically-induced happy part of her absolutely thrilled. Maybe Victor was her soulmate. Was that really such a bad thing? She’d always felt kind of weird around him, right?

No, she told herself firmly as she landed on the rooftop. Sex hormones or no, she wasn’t going to let herself just fall into a conclusion that reckless. Victor was … well, he was nice, she had to admit that, and he was unbelievably good in bed. Suspiciously good, one might even say … far too perceptive, far too good at reading her body’s signals and doing things to her that even she didn’t realize were going to draw so much pleasure out of her synapses … she felt herself blushing as she took the elevator down to the police department and took a deep breath, trying to corral her waylaid attention span into a more productive quarter. Yes, Victor was good in bed. But so far, that was all she knew. How could she decide a man was her soulmate based on … what, based on sexual compatibility? She’d seen far, far too many human movies to think that that was all that mattered.
